The Struggles of a Chef Wife – Scheduling Appointments

How in the world do you schedule a Dr. appointment or an appointment to leave your car for 6 hours, when your husband is a chef and you have kids?

Not easily!

Now maybe it’s just me, but as a chef wife, I struggle with this.

Let’s be honest.  There are some Dr. appointments I REALLY don’t want to go to with 3 kids.  And these types of appointments can only be scheduled M-F and usually need to be scheduled weeks in advance. (more…)

Julia, Child – a Book for the Chef’s Kids

If your chef kids are anything like ours, they always want to cook like Daddy (or Mommy).  They want to pick out their own ingredients and make up recipes (that we have the privilege of trying). I love their creativity and desire to learn.

The kitchen is usually a disaster afterwards, but at least that gives us the chance to teach them how to clean up after themselves, right?  (UGH!)

In our home library, we have quite a few children’s books about food, cooking and even a few about being a chef.  Our girls love to read and since our life revolves around food because of my husband’s career, we tend to read a lot of picture books that have something to do with food.

A few months ago, I came across the children’s book Julia, Child.  It’s a sweet book about two friends who love to cook and end up coming up with recipes for adults to help them grow young.  (They think grown-ups are too busy, hurried and worried.) (more…)

The Struggles of a Chef Wife: Sick Kids

I hadn’t intended for this to be my first topic in this series. But it’s what I’m struggling with at the moment!

Seeing your kids sick is no fun.  We’ve been fortunate to never have all 3 sick at the same time.  (Although now that I write that sentence, they will probably all wake up sick sometime soon, right?)  There have been times (like right now) they have “shared” their sickness with each other and just as one is starting to get better, another one gets hit with it.

Do Chefs Get Vacation Time? – Part 2

I’m coming back to this question again, “Do chefs get vacation time?” as I think about our quick last minute getaway as a family last week.  Taking a vacation with your family when you are a chef is not easy.  You have to plan your time off around holidays, menu changes, events, restaurant openings, etc.  Then throw the traditional school calendar in to the mix and GOOD LUCK finding a time to get away.

In the past, we’ve taken the girls out of school for a day or two so we could get away as a family.  But this past week, their mid-winter break lined up with a good day for my chef/husband to take off.  So with that extra day and his normal 2 days off, we headed up to northern WA.  The forecast for our days away was sunny (which rarely happens up here in February) and we were able to get a few last minute hotel reservations.  It was an amazing time away and really good for our family to spend uninterrupted time together.

I won’t bore you with the details of the trip (but will of course share a few of my favorite pictures.) (more…)

What’s Up Wednesday – A Day in the Life of a Chef Wife

What's Up Wednesday - A Day in the Life of a Chef Wife

Today, I’m linking up with a few other blogs over on The Hallway, (a lifestyle blog written by fellow chef wife Shannon Hall).  It’s just a fun way to get to know others and to let our readers know a bit more about us.

So here’s a bit about what’s been going on in the life of this chef wife lately:

What I loved about the past week:

My chef/husband being around more to help with the kids.  That might not seem like a big deal to many, but it was a rough week and it was really helpful to have him home a few evenings for support!  It was nice to not feel like I was parenting alone!  (Sigh of relief!!) (more…)
