It’s almost here. The day we’ve all be waiting for. The day we celebrate our love for each other . . . oh wait . . . the person we love is a chef and is working tomorrow night (and tonight and all the days around Valentine’s Day).
So what does Valentine’s Day mean to many chef wives and significant others?
A night alone.

I don’t know about your chef, but when I ask my chef/husband for gift ideas for a holiday he usually doesn’t have many ideas, if any. He always says he doesn’t need anything and really doesn’t have time for much. But of course we still want to get him something. Unfortunately I usually draw a blank when it comes to gift ideas for him.
If you google, “Gifts for a Chef,” you’ll get a bunch of foodie gifts, most of which, chefs would think are rather stupid. Most of them don’t want kitchen “gadgets” as a gift.
AHHHHHHHH!!!!! I have no idea what to get my chef for Christmas!!!!
Don’t worry. I have no idea either! Very few of us do.
(My chef husband is asking for a peaceful and calm home and just wants to have fun as a family, no matter what we are doing. I’m not sure how I’m going to wrap that up or pull it off, but I guess I’ll get working on it.)

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. I love that my husband is a chef. I love that when he is home, he cooks, because the food tastes SO MUCH BETTER!! I love that I can show him a recipe and he can immediately tell if it’s going to turn out. I love that he currently has 12,206 files in his recipe directory on Google Drive. I love how handsome he looks in his chef coat each morning when he walks out the door. The list could go on and on . . .
As Mother’s Day approaches, I know for many of us, it will just be a normal day . . . husband at work (on arguably the busiest day of the year) and us home with the kids. But instead of dwelling on that, I thought it would be fun to hear what it’s like to be the mother of a chef and who better to chat about this with than my sweet mother-in-law, Susan!
My husband and I started dating when I was 15 and he was 16. From the very first time I was over at their house, (as a girlfriend, not as a 5 year old with my family who supposedly sang and danced in front of the fireplace) I was treated like family.
There are many things I admire about my mother-in-law but the main one that stands out to me is her love for and dedication to her family. There is nothing she (and my father-in-law) wouldn’t do for her children and their families. The time and effort she puts into being a Mom and Grandma amazes me every day. She is a wonderful example of a godly Mother and wife and I am so grateful God allowed me to marry into her family and to be able to call her Mom.
So as we get ready to celebrate her this weekend (from 19 hours away – BOO!!), I thought it would be fun to ask her some questions about what it is like to be the mother of a chef AND the mother of a general manager/restaurant owner.
Yes, you read that right. 2 out of her 3 adult children are in the restaurant industry!(more…)
