So You Want to Own a Restaurant . . .

Has your chef ever thought about opening their own restaurant?

As I’m sitting here working on this post, my husband reads the title and immediately says, “No way!”

It’s definitely not for everyone.  But I know many chefs who would like to one day have their own place and many chef girlfriends and wives (or husbands and boyfriends) who wonder what it would really be like.

There are a few chef wives who have written books about opening a restaurant with their chefs.  You can read about Delancey and Wife of the Chef in a few posts I wrote last year after I read the books.

But today, I’d like to introduce you to my friend Dhanny.  I met her through this blog and have LOVED getting to know her this past year!  She has such a great perspective on restaurant ownership and I’m thankful she’s willing to share her story with us today!

Dhanny and her chef/husband Joe own My Kitchen Restaurant in New York.  If you live near by or travel there, I’m sure they’d love for you to stop by. 🙂 (more…)

What is it Like to Be Married to an Executive Chef (part 2)

I’m back this week again with another guest post about what it’s like to be married to a chef.  Today, I’d like you to meet Alix-Patrice Ogilvie.  She is married to an Executive Chef and I’m so grateful she was willing to share her story with us.  I know I can relate and I’m sure many of you can as weld. 🙂

Tell me a little about yourself and your chef (how you met, how long you’ve been together, do you have kids, etc.)

I met my Chef (Craig) on OKCupid about 2 years ago. We met online because we were both working in the industry, were coming out of rather long term relationships and we weren’t really looking for anything too serious so we wanted to stay out of the industry “dating pool” at our respective places. We have a 6 month old son named Jamie, but we call him Bean because the first thing Craig said when we saw him on the ultrasound was “It looks like a bean!” and it sort of stuck. Chef to the core right there. (more…)

What is it Like to be Married to a Sous Chef?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be married to a Sous Chef?  Maybe your chef is in culinary school or working on the line.  It’s always fun to get a glimpse of what’s to come in future positions.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to Sarah Bennett.  Her husband is a Sous Chef and she’s telling her story today. 🙂

Tell me a little about yourself and your chef (how you met, how long you’ve been together, do you have kids, etc.)

I’m a 29 year old nanny. Chef and I met through my roommate at a bar in Downtown Orlando. We’ve been together 3 years and married 2. Within a week I hurt every time he said he might move to a different city but I didn’t want to seem like one of those crazy clingy girlfriends but come to find out he was feeling the same way. In our three years together we’ve maybe spent five nights apart. No kids for me except Chef’s 12 year old daughter. We want kids but need to be more financially stable. We do have 5 fur babies. 🙂

What is it Like to Date a Culinary Student (and Line Cook)?

I’ll be honest.  I have no idea what it’s like to date or be married to someone in culinary school, as my chef/husband never went to culinary school.

So when a fellow chef/girlfriend, offered to share her story, of course I said yes!

Today, I’d like to introduce you to Kathryn.  Her boyfriend is going to Culinary School AND working as a Line Cook at the same time.  I know there are others of you that can relate to her story!  I’m sure she’d love to hear from you in the comments after you read it!

Tell me a little about yourself and your chef (how you met, how long you’ve been together, do you have kids, etc.)

I moved to Michigan in August 2011 for grad school.  I was really lonely because I was all alone in a new state, so a former college roommate of mine came to visit me for the weekend a couple of weeks after I’d moved in.  We were listening to music when we heard a knock at the door from the guy who lived in the apartment directly below mine.  He invited us over to his apartment, where he and his roommate were hanging out and playing video games.  Tuesday of that week, I went out with the guy who had knocked on my door, and we have been together since.

What is it Like to be Married to a Chef?

“Being married to a chef must be the best thing ever.  #marriedtoachef.”

This is what I read as I glanced at twitter this morning.

Really?  Best thing ever?

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not complaining.  I love that my husband is a chef.  I love that when he is home, he cooks, because the food tastes SO MUCH BETTER!!  I love that I can show him a recipe and he can immediately tell if it’s going to turn out.  I love that he currently has 12,206 files in his recipe directory on Google Drive.  I love how handsome he looks in his chef coat each morning when he walks out the door.  The list could go on and on . . .

But let me let you in on a little secret, in case you are reading this and are not married to a chef.  The life of a chef is not as glamorous as it looks on the Food Network. Let me give you a few examples . . . (more…)
