An Eggless Omelet Video, Tipping Chefs and Eggnog – A Few of My Favorite Things

Another month has passed . . . too many leaves in our yard, another promotion for my chef/husband, still adjusting to having all the girls in school, Seattle Restaurant Week is over tonight (maybe we can see my husband for a minute!!), and now the holidays are just around the corner (which makes me miss my husband even more than I already do)!  Crazy.

In the midst of the craziness I found a few things entertaining . . .I learned there are 25 things chefs never tell you.  Hmmmm . . . not sure about all of those, but it’s an interesting read.

Going along with my husband’s obsession with Top Ramen, I found this article.  This looks much more like something I would eat.  (I refuse to eat Top Ramen!)

Apparently making grilled cheese in a pan has now become too difficult for some people.  I wonder if these actually work?

I came across this great article about the life of a chef’s wife.  Read it.  It’s wonderful! (more…)

Cooking for your Family and Friends on your Day Off

Depending on which chef or chef wife you ask, you’ll get a different answer to the question, “Does a chef cook at home?”

In our family, my husband does tend to cook some on his days off.  It’s usually the meal I’ve planned.  He just makes it taste better than I would.  Plus, if he’s just sitting there while I’m cooking, I think I make him nervous.  (The other day as I was cutting something and he asked, “Are you OK over there?”  I was fine, but apparently he was concerned for the safety of my fingers.  LOL!!  He got up and finished the cutting job.)

Yesterday was no different . . . well maybe just a little.  He had the day off of work and we celebrated my 40th birthday with family and friends (6 weeks late.)  Just a simple BBQ menu – BBQ pork sliders, coleslaw, beans, potato salad, cornbread and apple crisp with salted caramel ice cream.

To me, this looked like a ton of food (and of course we had enough to feed everyone there that night and then again tonight if they all were to come back.)  But my chef/husband’s comment to me was how easy it was compared to the quantity of food he helped prepare at work on Saturday.   (more…)

A Day in the Life of a Chef Wife – October 2014

Every month on the 10th day, I grab my camera and capture my day with 10 pictures.

I was debating whether or not to even post the pictures today . . . wondering if it went along with my purpose for this blog.

I write about trying to combine restaurant and family life.  (Or maybe I should say fighting to combine restaurant and family life.  It’s so hard!!)

Yet again, my chef/husband went to work early and got home late.  So he is not in any of the pictures.  🙁

So should I share my day?

I decided yes.  (Obviously.)

As a chef wife, I have a lot of time by myself (and by myself, I mean with 3 children.)  That is the reality of being married to a chef who works 60, 70, 80+ hours a week.  So if I leave this day out, I’m leaving out reality.  This is my life as a chef wife.

My chef/husband has been working from the minute he wakes up to the minute his head hits the pillow for what seems like forever.  It’s been a long stretch without much time off.

He drove away as we were walking to the bus stop this morning and said, “You’re not going to take my picture, are you?”  So no picture of him in his car driving away.

I guess we’ll start at the bus stop . . . (more…)

Connecting with Other Chef Wives and Significant Others

Today’s post is from one of my readers, Tiffany Ewigleben, who has some great advice about connecting with other chef wives and significant others.

connecting with other chef wives

I don’t have many close female friends, or female friends in general. The ones I do have are my friends because of an understanding and commonality in our lives- mainly to do with our husbands or significant others.

I’m a wife of an executive chef, a man who is just starting to make a name for himself in our Midwest town. I’m also a mom of 2 boys-one a newborn.  I don’t have to share with your readership the daily stresses and joys of being ‘married to the chef’. I’m sure they are quite familiar with that.

What I want to talk about is the wonderful luck I’ve had connecting with a strong, wonderful group of women who are also married to or dating someone in the industry, and how having a support system helps make the hard days a lot easier. (more…)

Dining Out as a Chef’s Family

Dining Out as a Chef's FamilyI’m not sure about other chef families but we rarely eat out.

I feel funny saying that as I know that the restaurant industry is what pays our bills.  But yes, our family rarely eats out in a restaurant.

So why is it that we rarely eat out?

Really there are several reasons.

I’ve been debating about answering that question or even writing this post as I’m afraid being married to a chef might have made me a bit of a food snob.

But with that being said, here’s the truth . . .

First – I’m married to a chef (obviously.)  Whatever we eat in a restaurant, he can make at home (and it’s usually better.)

I also think that when we take our family out to dinner, the food should taste good.

I can’t believe I just said that. (more…)
