Day 12 – Think About the Restaurant Customers (12 Days of Encouragement for the Chef’s Family)

To conclude this series, today let’s think about all the customers that are going into the restaurants our chefs are working in.

For me, I picture a large fine dining restaurant, where people are dressed up, ready to meet family and friends to celebrate Christmas or just to enjoy a nice meal in the midst of all the hussle and bussle.

(Although I have to be honest.  I am at the point where I have to ask my husband what restaurant he’s going to be at each day, because of transitioning into a new position at work.  But for the holidays, I picture him at my favorite one!)

While I might be out and about doing things with the kids (because remember, I refuse to sit and home and be lonely and miserable this time of year), someone is enjoying my chef/husband’s cooking. (more…)

When the Chef Brings Home Samples . . .

I’ll have to admit, one perk I love about being married to a chef is the random samples we get to enjoy as a family.  You know what I’m talking about.

Your chef walks in the door late one night after work with a box full of samples – bread, steak, seafood, forks, knives, napkins . . .

The funny thing about samples, is that the chef only needs a bite or two to tell if he likes something and wants to use it in the restaurant.  And what do you do when you have 10 different steaks to try and get only one of each?  You can’t sell them in the restaurant, obviously.  So you cook them and try them (and depending on the job, you can do this at home so your family gets to enjoy the samples.)

How Much Do You Know About Food as the Wife or Significant Other of a Chef?

How much to you know about food as the spouse or significant other of a chef?

After 19 years of being married to a chef, you would think I would be a culinary genius. 

We have tons of cookbooks and recipes.  I’ve tasted more food than the average person. Our lives seem to revolve around food.  Vacations always have something to do with food and where we are going to eat.  We plan the meal or snacks for our date nights before we plan the rest of the night (if there is anything else we are going to do).

So why is it that I still know so little?

Where Do You Eat When You Travel With a Chef?

I don’t know about you, but when we travel, we always ask a local resident working at the hotel or grocery store, where the best place to eat in town is.  We want to experience the food of the area we are visiting (and because my husband is a chef, we are a little picky about where to eat.)

While the internet is a great resource for finding local restaurants, it doesn’t tell you much about the quality of the food.  And we all know that reviews on Yelp or another site like it, don’t necessarily represent what the restaurant is ACTUALLY like.  This leaves us back to asking the locals where to eat.
