How to Clean a Chef Coat

If you’re new to my site, start here.

My husband is an amazing chef.  I love to learn from him and enjoy all the food he makes, but I really dislike washing chef coats.   And when I say dislike, I really mean hate.

I really have nothing nice to say about chef coats.  They are big and bulky and stains stick to them like super glue.

With each restaurant change (and there have been quite a few as my husband has moved up in his career), come new chef coats and the task of finding what cleaning treatment will work the best for that specific coat.

If you are like me, you have googled, “How to clean a chef coat” on numerous occasions as you struggle to get out those stains that somehow made it past the apron.

You might have also wondered why in the world chef coats are white. (You can read more about that here.)

Below are some suggestions on how to clean a chef coat, compiled by myself and other chefs and their wives/significant others.  (Thanks for the help guys!)

(Also, make sure not to miss my post on how to get the smell out of chef clothes.)

Day 11 – You Are Not Alone (12 Days of Encouragement for the Chef’s Family)

At one point or another, we’ve all felt very alone being married to or dating a chef.  I say it all the time, but just in case you missed it . . . YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

The whole reason I write this blog is to connect with other chef families and so that we don’t feel so alone.

I remember when I told my chef/husband that I was thinking about starting this blog,  I had no idea there were already a few other brave chef wives who had done the same.

There are two other blogs I want to make sure you’ve heard about.  Neither of them are currently writing on the blog, but they are still full of great posts that might be helpful. (more…)

Day 8 – Don’t Compare Your Family to Others (12 Days of Encouragement for the Chef’s Family)

One of the things I’ve always struggled with being married to a chef, is not comparing our relationship or our family to others, especially to those who have a more traditional work schedule (home in the evenings and on weekends.)

12 days of encouragement for the chefs familyQuick tangent on that . . . is there really a job that is 9-5 (or somewhere close) any more?  Out of all my friends, I only have a handful whose husbands work a traditional schedule like that.  All the others are working one or more jobs with different hours, just like my chef/husband. (Although maybe not quite as many hours.)  OK, tangent over.

Comparing ourselves to others will only make us frustrated and upset.  Really.  What good is it going to do you?  Social media makes it so easy to see what everyone is doing all the time!  (more…)

Day 1: Twelve Days of Encouragement for the Chef’s Family

New to my site? Start here.
The holidays are a tough time for our Emulsified Family.

12 days of encouragement for the chefs familyBy the end of December, my chef/husband and I are usually just ready for Christmas and New Year’s Eve to be over.  I know that sounds horrible but December is a really hard month when you are married to a chef.

It’s 4-5 INSANE weeks of working way too many hours for my chef/husband.  We really don’t see him much at all during this time.  Because of this I struggle with loneliness, even with 3 kids.  I also feel bad that we are out doing fun Christmas things and my husband is slaving away at work to provide for us.  I could say more, but it would really just sound like complaining, so I’ll stop.

I thought maybe this year would be different, with him being the COO of a restaurant group and out of the kitchen, but the hours have still been crazy…including a restaurant opening.  I am thankful for his days off this month and don’t want to take them for granted, as I remember many years, he rarely had a day off in the month of December.

Since so many of you can relate to our family, I would guess that we are not alone in feeling this way each holiday season.

While in the past, I’ve dreaded the month of December as a chef’s wife, I’ve decided this Christmas season is going to be different.  No more moping around and wishing it was over for this chef’s wife and kids. (more…)
