Sneaking in Family Time

Tags: , ,

The traditional school calendar and the schedule of a chef do not emulsify AT ALL!!  (Sorry I couldn’t resist the “emulsify” comment.)

While my chef/husband and I had a very nice date during the school day on Wednesday, he hasn’t been able to see the girls much at all because they’ve been in school for most of the day when he’s been off.  🙁

We have to sneak in family time any time we can get it.

Little requests like, “Daddy, can you walk us to the bus stop this morning?” are a big deal at our house, because it’s time with just Daddy.

Let me share what our house was like Wednesday morning before school.  (Keep in mind the girls had not seen my chef/husband much the past few days.)  We were all up and partially awake.  Two out of the three kids felt something was terribly wrong and were concerned they could not go to school and needed to stay home.  This left my husband and I to figure out if there truly was something wrong or if they were still waking up and just really wanted to stay home because Daddy was home.  It was a rough morning all the way through breakfast.

As we got up to start clearing the table, my chef/husband told us that it looked like he was going to be playing the piano at the restaurant on New Year’s Eve, and he sat down at the piano and started playing.

The entire mood of the house changed.

Everyone was suddenly fine and were requesting different songs from Frozen to be played on the piano.  The next 20 minutes were filled with singing, dancing, smiling and laughing as my chef/husband played the piano and the girls sang and danced around the room.  The breakfast dishes stayed on the table and we just spent time as a family.  (Leaving things a mess and just sitting down is VERY hard for me.  But I did it and am so glad I did!!)

Could I have planned this?  No way!  But it was probably some of the most fun we’ve had as a family in a few weeks.  Unfortunately we had to stop and head off to the bus stop, but we’ll take what we can get!

Later after school, we jumped in the car and snuck in an hour of bowling with the older two girls as we were waiting for our youngest to get home from a birthday party.

emulsified family

Stylin’ in our bowling shoes! (I did take video of the singing/dancing/piano playing this morning, but I’m not to sure how happy my chef/husband would be if I posted it.   I’ll just keep it for us.)

When your dad’s a chef, you have to sneak in moments to spend time with him any time you can. Who knew that the last 20 minutes at home before the bus stop would be some of the best time together the entire week?  Or that learning to keep score at an old bowling alley with no electronic scoring could be so much fun?

Our family needs more days like this . . .

How does your family sneak in time with your chef?  Do you find little pockets of time here and there to spend together?

From one chef wife to another,

Jennifer
