There Are Still Some Things That Surprise Me!

There are still some things that surprise me after being married to a chef for so long.

For example, last night I was surprised to hear my husband say, “I’m expecting one of those on Monday.”  That’s not really an odd statement, except that it was said as we were watching an Anthony Bourdain show where they were butchering a very large hog.

So what he’s expecting on Monday is a hog.  I have no idea what went on in the episode for the next few minutes as we discussed this.  It’s just not something you hear every day (at least I don’t.)

This time the hog, is arriving at the restaurant instead of our home, so we will not get to witness this process first hand.  But I’m sure before, during and after pictures will be available at my request.

I’m having visions of the last time this happened . . . 2 chefs, 1 very large pig, enormous knives and a large sanitized work area in our garage.  (This was one time when I’m glad our kitchen was not big enough for a task!)

Maybe if I grew up on a farm, I would be used to this.  However, I grew up in a home where food was prepared just because we needed to eat, so this is not “normal”.

Growing up, my parents did not bring home live lobsters and let me touch and look at them before they prepared Lobster Pot Pie for a tasting at work the next day.

I never went to a restaurant and asked the owner if I could have crab added to my Mac and Cheese.

I never sat and watched one of my parents paint a large picture entirely out of chocolate for Chocolate Lover’s Brunch that week.

While these things would have seemed out of the ordinary to me as a child, they do not for our girls.  These things are normal.  (Although I do think the comment about expecting a pig on Monday did catch our older daughter’s attention!)

They probably think that these thing go on in every home.  I hope this doesn’t come as a shock to them later on in life.  Hopefully our daughters’ future husbands are learning to cook at a young age, because they are going to have big shoes to fill!
