Last week was mid-winter break for our kids AND my chef/husband took the week off! I can’t even remember the last time that happened. No email (OK tons of email, but email notifications turned off), only a few texts, 1 voice mail. . . I probably should go into the restaurant and corporate office and personally thank his staff for this. 🙂
So I guess the answer to the question “Do chef’s get vacation time?” is yes.
It’s not always easy to find a good time to take it. For his restaurant, right between Valentine’s Day and the start of Dine Around Seattle was perfect. It also happened to line up with mid-winter break for the girls! Yeah!
So after reflecting on an amazing week as a family, here are 10 things that happened:
1. We had so much fun together as a family!
I was a little nervous about what it would be like to have him home for a week, as there have been many times when things have been awkward, the kids have been strange toward him because they haven’t seen him much, etc. (More on this another time.) But our week was AMAZING!!
PLEASE DO NOT PUT GREEN FOOD COLORING IN YOUR EGGS!
OK . . . so yelling is probably not the best way to start off a post. I understand that many of you now think I’m crazy and wonder why I would ever say that. I’ve been told I should write about things I’m passionate about, and this is one of them!
So before you click away to somewhere else on my site, let me explain. Today is Read Across America Day – the day schools celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Now if you don’t have young children, or your kids are older and it’s been a while since you’ve had the privilege of celebrating this “Holiday,” feel free to browse to another category on my blog and I apologize for yelling at you.
However, if you know immediately what I’m talking about, please keep reading. (more…)
It’s 6:56 pm on Saturday night and my phone rings.
I usually love when my phone rings and it’s my husband calling. My cell phone shows my favorite picture of him and it brings a smile to my face. Usually this smile continues as I answer and talk to him. But not tonight.
Why is my phone ringing in the middle of the dinner rush? I know there are a crazy amount of reservations tonight at the restaurant!
Turns out the power is out at the restaurant and he is calling to ask me to look into it online and send him a text with the details.
Of course it’s at this moment that all 3 children go completely crazy and my calm and quiet home turns into a home full of kids screaming and crying. Lovely. (I seriously think there is something magical about both the phone and the car that make my kids go crazy . . . more about that another time though.) (more…)
So what does Super Bowl Sunday look like at our house? Not much.
I realize by saying that, some of my friends might disown me. Living in the Seattle area has been a bit crazy the past few weeks because the Seahawks are doing so well. My daughters’ school gathered as a group to take a picture showing their support on Blue Friday. Seahawks flags are everywhere. Half the population of Seattle (or more) is wearing a jersey, and every store is out of Skittles. It’s CRAZY!!
There are still some things that surprise me after being married to a chef for so long.
For example, last night I was surprised to hear my husband say, “I’m expecting one of those on Monday.” That’s not really an odd statement, except that it was said as we were watching an Anthony Bourdain show where they were butchering a very large hog.
So what he’s expecting on Monday is a hog. I have no idea what went on in the episode for the next few minutes as we discussed this. It’s just not something you hear every day (at least I don’t.) (more…)
