How to Clean a Chef Coat

If you’re new to my site, start here.

My husband is an amazing chef.  I love to learn from him and enjoy all the food he makes, but I really dislike washing chef coats.   And when I say dislike, I really mean hate.

I really have nothing nice to say about chef coats.  They are big and bulky and stains stick to them like super glue.

With each restaurant change (and there have been quite a few as my husband has moved up in his career), come new chef coats and the task of finding what cleaning treatment will work the best for that specific coat.

If you are like me, you have googled, “How to clean a chef coat” on numerous occasions as you struggle to get out those stains that somehow made it past the apron.

You might have also wondered why in the world chef coats are white. (You can read more about that here.)

Below are some suggestions on how to clean a chef coat, compiled by myself and other chefs and their wives/significant others.  (Thanks for the help guys!)

(Also, make sure not to miss my post on how to get the smell out of chef clothes.)

Day 11 – You Are Not Alone (12 Days of Encouragement for the Chef’s Family)

At one point or another, we’ve all felt very alone being married to or dating a chef.  I say it all the time, but just in case you missed it . . . YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

The whole reason I write this blog is to connect with other chef families and so that we don’t feel so alone.

I remember when I told my chef/husband that I was thinking about starting this blog,  I had no idea there were already a few other brave chef wives who had done the same.

There are two other blogs I want to make sure you’ve heard about.  Neither of them are currently writing on the blog, but they are still full of great posts that might be helpful. (more…)

What is it Like to Date an Executive Chef/Food and Beverage Director?

Over the past months, we’ve heard from different chef wives about what it’s like to be married to or dating a chef in a specific position on the kitchen.  Today, I’d like to introduce you to chef girlfriend Danielle Valenilla.  She is dating and Executive Chef/Food and Beverage Director.

Tell me a little about yourself and your chef (how you met, how long you’ve been together, do you have kids, etc.)

My chef and I have been together for about 18 months, but we’ve known each other for about 13 years. We met on the school bus when we both lived in a small town. I was in 8th grade; he was a sophomore. We stayed in touch throughout high school and college despite the crazy hours; we had the kind of friendship that could be successful without seeing each other constantly. After years of bumping into each other and looking for love in the wrong places, we found it in our friendship. I had an extra ticket to a Broadway show and his schedule aligned just right for that to become the beginning of us as a couple and not just friends. Our dating life basically existed in a one day a week kind of thing but our foundation of friendship went far. We’ve lived together for a year, and it’s been amazing. We don’t have kids, and we’re pretty sure we won’t because of some of the goals we have for ourselves. I’m on a journey to get my doctorate, and he’s driven to make his kitchen the best it can be. How to Have a Successful Career AND be Married to a Chef – Part 3

Today, as we continue on in our series talking about how to have a successful career AND be married to a chef (oh, and don’t forget about kids), I’d like to introduce you to Amity Howard Reiss.

Amity is a wife of 10 years and has been together for 19 with a successful Executive Chef. Chef Joel Reiss has worked for some of the most well known establishments and Chefs in NYC. He is currently the Executive Chef for the S Prime Steakhouse in Long Island City, Queens. She is a full time school psychologist for a Nassau County school district and slowly starting a part time photography business. They have two amazing little boys, 4 and 5 years old, and reside in Oceanside, NY.

I’m so thankful for Amity’s willingness to share her thoughts on this important topic that many of you have expressed interest in.

A woman can do it all! That is how I truly feel. We can support our husbands in their career, honor our own path in our personal pursuits of interest and raise our children to be intelligent, compassionate and successful citizens. Now, how we manage to do this takes a strong path of conviction, not to mention a great amount of compromise and sacrifice at times.

How to have a successful career and be married to a chef? Let’s now add children to that equation? How to have a career, be married to a chef and raise a family…all successfully??

Let’s chuckle a little at that and be honest. It’s not an easy task and I would hardly admit that I am successful at any one area. Sometimes it feels like I am flying by the seat of my pants just near the precipice at all times. (more…)
